PRESS RELEASE
RELEASED: Friday 10 May 2019
Pupils from Cluny Primary School got to explore outer space and witness the rotation of the Earth and the shadow of the sun when Day or Night? visited their school. Day or Night? is part of Generation Science’s touring programme of science shows and workshops for schools, delivered by Edinburgh Science.
The workshop is sponsored by leading independent UK solar developer Elgin Energy. The Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Richard Lochhead, was also in attendance.
This entertaining, story-telling introduction to night and day looks at the sun, the moon and the Earth and how they move around in space. It also explores the meaning of time and how we can accurately tell how long it is until nightfall using candles and sundials.
Head Teacher Claire Wood at Cluny Primary School, said:
“We are very excited to welcome the Generation Science tour to the school. The hands-on, practical nature of the ‘Day or Night?’ Workshop will hopefully be an enjoyable way of teaching children about why one child is getting up just as, in another part of the world, another goes to bed.”
Science Minister Richard Lochhead said:
“We want to inspire everyone to take an active interest in science and discover how it can enrich our everyday lives. Initiatives like Generation Science help young people across the country understand how scientific concepts apply in the real world through practical and exciting events. Generation Science makes this accessible by bringing diverse topics from the science of sound, to hands-on robotics and even outer space into classrooms, providing valuable opportunities all year round for young people to engage with science throughout their education.”

Ronan Kilduff, Managing Director, Elgin Energy said:
“This is the second year of our four-year partnership with Generation Science. Our sponsorship is focused in Moray where we are developing two large solar farms. Through this partnership we are able to provide a contribution direct to local communities and enable Generation Science to visit remote schools for the first time. We hope that the next generation of scientists and engineers are inspired by the wonderful workshops on offer.”
Joan Davidson, Generation Science Manager said:
“We are delighted to be touring this year to Cluny Primary School. We will visit over 600 schools in Scotland over the spring and summer terms to show young learners the wonder of science and its real world applications. We aim to improve the provision of science education in Scottish primary schools, to bring science to life in the classroom and to educate and inspire young learners in science.”
Day or Night? is one of 15 amazing shows and workshops provided by Generation Science and powered by EDF Energy that are designed to make science fun, exciting, easy to understand and to help teachers cover the school science curriculum.
Over the last 27 years since Generation Science was launched, it has reached well over 1 million pupils in Scotland. It is the largest science education outreach provider in the UK, visiting schools all over Scotland with a programme of different shows and workshops for all ages, from infant classes right up to upper primary. This year the tour will visit over 600 schools in 32 Local Authority areas from the Borders to the Shetland Isles.
